Note that the combined drop rate for Champion, Skin, Ward Skin, Summoner Icon, Emote, and Orange Essence is 80%. The remaining 20% is for additional loot, including a chance for multiple shards in one chest. Gemstones and Ultimate/Mythic Skin drops are considered bonus loot, meaning they don’t replace a primary item slot but are granted in addition to it.

The Hextech system also has a “bad luck protection” for gemstones. You’re guaranteed to find at least one gemstone in every 50 chests opened (if you haven’t found one prior to that threshold).
