LP Gain/Loss vs. MMR Difference (Simplified)

Think of it like this: you have two numbers that decide your climb in League of Legends:

  • LP (League Points): These are the points you see after every game. They show your progress in your current rank.
  • MMR (Matchmaking Rating): This is a hidden, secret number that truly shows how good the game thinks you are.

The game compares your secret MMR to the average MMR of your current rank. This is how it decides how much LP you gain or lose:

  • High MMR: If your hidden MMR is much higher than your rank’s average, you’ll gain more LP for wins and lose less for losses. The game wants to push you up faster!
  • Low MMR: If your hidden MMR is lower than your rank’s average, you’ll gain less LP for wins and lose more for losses. The game thinks you might belong in a lower rank.
  • MMR Matches Rank: If your MMR is about the same as your rank’s average, you’ll gain and lose a similar amount of LP for wins and losses.

The chart below will help you visually understand how your hidden MMR affects the LP you gain or lose in each game.

These are typical ranges. Actual LP gains and losses may vary depending on your hidden MMR and match quality.

Key Takeaway: MMR is King

Your hidden MMR is the primary driver of your LP gains and losses. Instead of just focusing on LP numbers, prioritize improving your overall gameplay. Consistent good performance will naturally raise your MMR, leading to healthier LP gains and a smoother climb.

How LP & MMR Work Together

Understanding how LP (League Points) and MMR (Matchmaking Rating) interact is crucial for climbing the League of Legends ranked ladder. While LP is what you see after every game, MMR is your hidden, true skill rating. Riot uses your MMR to match you with similarly skilled players and determine your LP gains and losses.

Think of it this way:

  • LP is your public scoreboard. It moves up and down visibly after each ranked game.
  • MMR is your secret report card. It’s the number Riot uses behind the scenes to find balanced matches.

The closer your MMR is to the average MMR for your current visible rank, the more “normal” your LP gains and losses will be (e.g., +15-20 LP for a win, -15-20 LP for a loss). However, if your MMR is significantly higher than your current rank’s average, the system tries to push you up faster, resulting in higher LP gains (+25 LP or more) and lower losses. Conversely, if your MMR is lower than your rank’s average, you’ll see lower LP gains (e.g., +10-14 LP) and higher losses, as the system tries to pull you down to a more appropriate visible rank.

Examples of LP Gain

Let’s look at Peter to understand how this plays out:

Jax Champion Icon

Meet Peter. He’s Gold IV, but his MMR is actually closer to Gold I players because he’s been consistently outperforming his rank.
When Peter wins, he gains +25 LP because the system wants to push him up faster. When he loses, he only drops -13 LP.
This shows the system believes he belongs in a higher rank and is giving him an accelerated climb.

Fizz Champion Icon

Now meet Mike. He’s also Gold IV, but after a losing streak, his MMR dropped to match Silver II players.
When Mike wins, he only gains +14 LP. But when he loses, he drops -20 LP.
The system is trying to pull him down to a rank that matches his actual (lower) MMR. Mike needs to consistently improve his play to bring his MMR back up.

Strategies to Maximize Your LP Gains

Maximizing your LP gains isn’t just about winning more games; it’s about optimizing your performance and approach to the game. Here are key strategies to help you climb more efficiently:

Boost Icon

Focus on Performance

Optimize your KDA, Vision Score, and Objective Participation. High individual performance, even in losses, signals to the system that your MMR should be higher, leading to better LP gains in the long run.

Locket of the Iron Solari Icon

Strategic Duo Queue

Duo with a consistent partner whose MMR is similar or slightly higher than yours. A reliable teammate helps improve your team’s synergy and win rate, indirectly boosting your personal MMR.

Master Yi Icon

Master Your Champion Pool

Stick to 2-3 champions per role and truly master them. Deep understanding of your champions’ matchups and mechanics leads to more consistent wins, which is crucial for increasing your MMR and LP.

Heal Summoner Spell Icon

Mindset & Tilt Management

Maintain a positive attitude and know when to take a break. Tilting leads to poor decisions and losing streaks, which severely impact your MMR and LP. Take a step back if you’re feeling frustrated.
